Info/Text: David Graves und Martha Hurley ließen zu Beginn des ersten Corona-Lockdowns im Frühjahr 2020 dieses Banner produzieren und hängten es vom Balkon ihres Wohnhauses am Heumarkt im 3. Bezirk ab, wo es bis Sommer 2021 zu sehen war. Das Banner sollte ein Zeichen der Solidarität und Wertschätzung jener “Systemerhalterinnen” (Supermarktkassiererinnen, Pflegekräfte, Ärzte, Polizei, Müllabfuhr etc.) darstellen, die während des Lockdowns die Grundversorgung der Stadt aufrecht erhielten und dafür sorgten, dass ein großer Teil der Bevölkerung in dieser Zeit sicher zuhause bleiben konnte.
David Graves und Martha Hurley über ihre Motivation, dieses Banner zu produzieren, in einem E-Mail an das Wien Museum vom 10. Juli 2021:
“In the early days, given the severity and uncertainty of the pandemic, we thought it important to recognize the efforts and sacrifices that others were making in order to allow us to stay home and stay safe, and for society to continue to function. This included government workers, grocery store workers, emergency personnel, police, trash collectors, utility workers, and many others that we are probably not even aware of, hence the collective term “service workers” in our banner. Medical personnel, health care workers, emergency workers all worked tirelessly and at great risk against a new and relentless virus to minimize the suffering that individuals and society endured. We also recognized early on that given the severity of the virus, and the lack of a vaccine, that this pandemic would not be over quickly. The rapid development of the vaccines, plus the implementation of vaccination programs, will certainly help bring an end to the massive misery and societal disruption brought on by this terrible pandemic. As we write this in July 2021, the virus is still not finished with us. It continues to wreak havoc in various parts of the world, and continued collective efforts and vigilance will be necessary to bring a final end to this dark chapter in history. In our hearts, for the rest of our lives, we will continue to be grateful to all of those people, both recognized and unknown, who have made it possible for the rest of us to stay safe.”
