Earliest Coinage in Austria
The earliest coinage in Austria began in the first third of the twelfth century. Around 1120/1130 both Margrave Leopold III in Krems as well as the abbots and counts of Formbach in Neunkirchen began to mint coins. Joining somewhat later were the mints in Enns and Pitten, before the Vienna mint was established in 1190. The minting Archdiocese Salzburg, which at this time did not yet belong to Austria, also had a minting site in Friesach in Carinthia.
