Dance and avant-garde in Vienna

After 1918, a brilliant rise of modern and free dance took place in Vienna. The traditional poses and body ideals now came more and more in question. The experiments were also reflected in photography. Stars of the stage, such as Tilly Losch and Toni Birkmeyer cultivate their photographic image in public. They commission photos from the most famous Viennese studios. The fame was beneficial for both: for dancers, who could increase their prominence through eye-catching photos, and for the photographers, with renowned clients.
